Kinda a personal question, but I figure I'll probably have to face this sooner or later. I'm just wondering what happens to dreads as us men face this potential hazzard?

My hairline is the sort that will recede from my temples (I know it looks like it might be already, but I've always looked like that) and is not like the sort that might thin from the crown.

I'm hoping the new root growth will cause the dreads to kind of recede with my hair. I guess more likely the hair will thin, and eventually be too thin to support the dread - causing drop-off.

Luckily this isn't a current issue for me. But now in my late 30s I can't pretend that this issues doesn't sometimes weigh on my mind.

I think ye olde Mr Magpie recently combed one out due to hair loss. You'll have to wait for him to arrive.

Hair loss is also something I dread. I like my hair. My dad has a full head of hair, but his brother does not. I like to think that this means I'm safe.

Yeah, I had to comb out a dread at the front of my hairline because the root wasn't strong enough to support it. That's literally the only one I have that problem with, though.

As for bald spots, there are dreadheads who have them. It's a matter of waiting really, not much you can do to avoid it! I don't think it's all that noticeable early on with dreads, anyway.

Cool. Thanks for the thoughts. Don't relish the idea of having to comb out a dread, but I guess I cross that bridge if I ever come to it.

My father's hair is a little thin, but still has full coverage at 75. My uncle went bald in his 20s. I seem to have got my hair type from my mother though and I don't know her family history.

I also have a a cousin that got dreads, then went bald soon after and blamed the dreadlocks. I can't see how that can be anything but just a bad coincidence though.

There's not much hairloss in my family. I'll probably get the same as my grandfather where the sides of the hairline gets a bit higher. He didn't have much hair loss either. A bit thinner, sure, but not much.

I'm lucky with that, anyway.

And I guess it's not to worry too much since the dreads keep a lot of the fallen hairs in them so I would think you'll have hair longer than most :)
